On Boeri: “On Bob’s last trip to Italy he met Giorgio & Roberto Boeri, two winemakers from Bionzo Costigliole d'Asti in Piedmont. Bob was very impressed with the brothers’ commitment to quality and with the fantastic group of wines that they produce! Their entire line of wines including Barbera, Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, and Moscato, both sweet and rarely seen dry, are sensational! These wines provide great value and outstanding quality for lovers of the great wines of Italy. Don’t miss discovering the remarkable wines produced by our friends Giorgio & Roberto Boeri.”

On Pörlapà: “Pörlapà is a truly superior Barbera d'Asti. We drank the 2004, and Ken said, ‘It doesn't taste thin and cheap!’ For so many do, as we all know even if we don't talk about it. It's a nice, round wine with plenty of authentic earthiness, brambly fruit, snappy tannins and acids, etc.”
On Beviòn Selezione 2005: “This is a barriqued Chardonnay that has a mid-Atlantic taste profile, a little bit Burgundy and a little bit California, with a slight leaning toward Cali. This is a well-made wine that should please aficionados of California Chardonnay.”

On Ribota: “4/5 stars, ‘Perfect for Company’. With summer-like heat weighing down and friends on the way over, this seemed like the ideal bottle to open. I had just prepared fresh fruit drizzled with honey and wanted to serve it with something light and refreshing. Aromas of white peaches dance on the nose while a light effervescence dances on the palate. It's fruity and floral with light sweetness and a crisp, clean finish. Try it with friends since that is what ‘Ribota’ means.”

On Barbera d'Asti: “A truly interesting Barbera, with a fresh bouquet and complex, ranging from roses to aromatic herbs and forest berries…. Good on the palate, immediately juicy and not aggressive. Fragrant and honest, and with a distinct profile of red fruits. Destined to get even better in 2-3 years.”

On Pörlapà: “Intense bouquet of spice, deep ripe plums and sweet liquorice. A powerful and full bodied Barbera from one of the finest Barbera specialist producers in Asti region. Long finish.”

On Martinette: "This wine is appreciated for its typical Barbera [profile], soft but full bodied, ready to be drunk young, it continues to develop with a few years of aging. Its versatility allows it to accompany well a complete meal.”

On Martinette and Pörlapà: “Staying in Piemonte, we tried Boeri’s Barbera d'Asti Superiore Martinette 2001 (13%), … has an intense purple-ruby color, bouquet of blackberries and blueberries, with nice freshness and fruity consistency, with a slight tendency towards rawness. The first impression on the palate is full of fruit, still fresh, and the drinking is wonderful and fragrant. The Barbera d'Asti Superiore Pörlapà 2000 (14.5%), also this one has an intense and dark purple-ruby color, and though it is still a little closed, it already shows lovely notes of ripe black fruits and liquorice. As it entered the palate, oak announces gently it presence, and the wine shows its robustness, concentration, sweetness and fine tannins.”

On Boeri wines: “This winery has some extremely interesting wines, starting with a crisp, very dry but refreshing Chablis-like unoaked Chardonnay 2006. Even the alcohol level was a low 12.5%. Even though a wee-bit too expensive only because of our high taxation, this wine would go as an aperitif or with sea food on any corner of the earth. Bevion 2000, a Chardonnay a few bottles of which are only left with the owners, was opened for us for tasting. Surprisingly fresh, full body; still crisp a slightly heavy on the oak, nevertheless an expressive wine evoking the emotions of the winemaker. The Barbera and the Pörlapà were their signature wines. But an interesting wine they produce from a blend of Nebbiolo (70%) and Barbera (30%), known as Parbòlo was an engaging wine.”

On Pörlapà 2004: “Color was clear, richly ruby red. On the nose it is intense, persistent and broad, with distinct notes of cherries, blueberries and ripe plums, and pleasantly boisé. On the palate it is full but lean, persistent, with notes of freshness and astringency blended with soft and warm presence of alcohol. The finish is fruity, with notes of liquorice. Note: An excellent wine. Rating: 17/20”
On Ribota: “We especially like this Moscato Docg which had a really interesting freshness.”
Jenny Tan, Wine Club, Singapore
On Martinette: "A medium bodied wine full of dark fruits, such as blueberries and blackberries, with a nice fresh finish… a popular choice for the dining table as it goes well with a range of food thanks to its high acidità and low tannins." |
